The Hands of Time

Linking with the Sunday Muse for Muse # 88

Time is making fools of us again. ~J.K. Rowling

As a child I tried to swiftly chase time
Wanting to make it move faster ahead
Oil all the levers of every clock
See them dash around with fantastic speed
I longed for now to be later
And for later to be all that now was not
The freedom of adult sized shoes
To carry me where I wanted to go
And that was somewhere else
Up ahead in the distance
not where I stood
Years have passed since then
And I like the place where my adult shoes stand
Now is a precious commodity
I hold it gently yet very close
And I long to slow down the hands of time
Let the moments last longer and take it all in
For I look back and wonder where the time has gone
It slipped through my fingers
While I was so busy looking ahead.

Trying To Fill a Grand Canyon In My Heart

It would complete me if you would join us....well maybe not, but it would make me happy!

He who travels in search of something which he has not got, travels away from himself and grows old even in youth among old things. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I was 8 years old and looking at my world
I would dream of perfect places
Living a life I wish I knew
Building a world only my eyes could see

Trying to fill a Grand Canyon in my heart

Years later when I was married and looking in the mirror
I tried to build a perfect place
That all the world could see
Living a life I wish I truly knew

Trying to fill a Grand Canyon in my heart

Now that I am older and looking beyond myself
I have learned that to find fulfillment
I must first be content and honest with who I am
To build a life of purpose that brings me joy

For trying to fill a Grand Canyon in my heart
Has only left me weary and unable to see
What was truly missing all along.

The Stars and Their Stripes

Also linking with Imaginary Gardens for Kerry's prompt "Iconic people society"

From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
~Samuel F. Smith, "America"

She waved her flag for freedom amidst a higher wind
hoping for contentment or just one truer friend
in a world that knows it's legends only by the stars
and the stripes that wave higher seem to have more scars
so hold your banner gently and keep it close in love with pride
for fulfillment cannot be reached for it is a flag that waves inside.

My crown is called content, a crown that seldom kings enjoy.
