A Mighty Weakness

Linking with the Sunday Muse for Muse #190.  Come join us!

Each substance of a grief hath twenty shadows... ~William Shakespeare

My soul is a parakeet that tries to fly

But my heart can be a cage

Gripping mightily to all I hold dear

But in the letting go I am weak

Like a lost man on a ledge

No longer able to stand

We lose many things in this life

And we carry each loss as we go

Like weary children crying to be picked up

We lift them upon our hip

Close and careful not to drop them

So I find that even in the letting go

I am still truly holding on.

  2. So true, for good or ill. It would be nice to set them down every once in awhile...

  6. I love the way you're able to take a difficulty and sanctify both the response and the inevitable loss in the space of your poem.

  7. Carrie, this is wonderful. My eyes were stinging after I read it. Some things we can never let go. These lines resonated so strongly:
'And we carry each loss as we go
Like weary children crying to be picked up
We lift them upon our hip
Close and careful not to drop them'

  8. Very true, Carrie. We hold on, not forgetting where we went wrong. Even for most when we don't admit it. "Sitting on a ledge" may settle us down for a bit.
Your line, "even in the letting go I am still truly holding on," rings. If I steal it I'll change the "I am" to "I'm". But don't worry much, I can't write something that would merit it.

  9. Holding on Carrie is about all we got in the long run, and the closer to the end of that run, the tighter we grip!

    1. I have to throw you for a loop once in a while Qbit. Always glad to make a true comedian laugh. Usually it is your clever jokes and play on words that crack me up.

  12. "But my heart can be a cage." I remember when mine was. And yes, re the letting go and holding on........I do that, too. There are some things we want never to let go of.
