Lost Upon a Wind That Never Blew,

“Ah, look at all the lonely people.” —The Beatles (Eleanor Rigby)

Flocks of birds and forests must know something human hearts do not.

Like a choir they hold the comfort of reaching in unison.

Always hungry for the sky.

Still man becomes a ghost

alone down a darkened hall.

A silver haired shadow

searching for a memory

that no one else recalls.

Silent stories

are a house burning to the ground,

never to be entered or seen again.

Some hearts are broken wings and fallen branches.

Secrets lost upon a wind that never blew.

A loneliness that only humans truly know.

  1. You've outdone yourself with this one, Carrie, I love the comparison to a choir, the burned house, the fallen branches, all of it. And thank you for your amazing enthusiasm for my little project!

  2. Lovely and haunting, Carrie. I could see the lonely human in the darkened hall - each of us, at a certain point in time.........wonderfully written!

  5. I love the calm progression here, Carrie, that leads us through the ribbons weaving our time and story as humans. Especially "...Some hearts are broken wings and fallen branches..." And some are songbirds, as here. Lovely poem.

  6. Your poems are always so beautiful, Carrie, truly. You encapsulate the forgotten quiet things and tenderly remind us, the reader, to look for them. So many lines I could quote but these struck me:

    "Silent stories
are a house burning to the ground"

And also the line Hedgewitch quotes about some hearts being broken wings and fallen branches.
