“In memory's telephoto lens, far objects are magnified.” ~John Updike
My heart has haunted places
where ghosts fill each hall and every room
it is old empty architecture
that is filled with what once was
like the fullest of blue moons
every loved one’s dream
lingers behind the curtain
where the projector once set it to the screen
and it rewinds and then replays
forever in my memory to be seen
my love carries them onward
for you know the show must go on
and poetry gives each one a voice
to sing their own inspiring song
the moments that they brought
are heard not on any stage
for they are felt in loving memory
on the undying ink of
every page.
I love the Updike quote: so apt. And I LOVE the idea of memory as a projector, rewinding and replaying. So good. That is exactly what it does. Your closing lines are perfect; they live on in our poems.
ReplyDelete*sigh* Yep, they are always there.
ReplyDeleteThis is so visual, I see and feel your poem.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful... I feel like I was walking with ghosts and loving they never leave me
ReplyDeleteYou are right, we must never forget that "the show must go on." A beautiful tribute.
ReplyDelete..
"and poetry gives each one a voice" -- yes, wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLoved this. I see my memories in a similar way. And so often they creep into my writing.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThe rewind and replay....so familiar. I enjoyed this :)
ReplyDeleteI love this part - may the poets continue to sing on..
ReplyDeleteand poetry gives each one a voice
to sing their own inspiring song
Gosh, the meter and rhyme here make a song. I like the idea of the heart as old architecture--and movie theatre--and source of inspiration.
ReplyDeletethe show must go on indeed...
ReplyDeleteSuperb ending on this excellent poem, Carrie!
