What the Future Holds

The geometry of human progress is an expanding circle of compassion. Every advance in thinking has shown that our relationships extend further than we thought. ~Carl Safina

The red fox runs the autumn river
The black fox leaps the summer wind
The white fox treads the winter snow
Each hunting nimbly to feed their den
We all are diverse hunters
Searching for something more
Longing for a grander purpose
We exit every open door
We are different colored cloths
Part of a grand coat we all must wear
Trying to survive the winter’s rath
And the cold we all must bear
One man’s hungry aching
To hunt down what the future holds
Is part of the fabric of nations
That cover the entire globe.

  1. Almost the entire story of what it is to be human in these excellent words, from survival to aspiration, whether good or bad. If only we could remember it all begins with nature.

  3. Carrie, I love how this poem begins with the foxes and the seasons. Absolutely gorgeous. The segue to all of us sharing the same coat is so well done. I love this poem!

  6. Well said, and profound. We would do well to remember that we are all connected.

  9. I like being part of the fabric, the globe. I've made up a reason that Spring is the one left out--but maybe it's just because there's only 3 fox. The flow of this poem is as lovely as the picture it draws.
