Linking with Poets United Mid-Week Motif ~ Rising Above
Brought to us by Sumana
You can cage the singer but not the song. ~Harry Belafonte
We build ships to put in cases on display
and assemble model cars to place upon a shelf,
but a good song or rhyme cannot be kept down.
Its voice carries beyond the pages that hands once held.
and the melody rises with the singers that stand to their feet
hailing to all souls to both listen and to truly speak
Each song has a message that will echo and project to far lands
for the first solo "a cappella" never forgets the lyrical refrain
as soon there is a choir each holding a songbook in hand
and the melody rises with the singers that stand to their feet
hailing to all souls to both listen and to truly speak.
Ah, Harry! Excellent poem and Ode to Song.
ReplyDeleteIts voice carries beyond the pages that hands once held. Love
ReplyDeleteSong, music such a treasure to behold Great
I like the repeated lines, Carrie, and you are right - a song carries a message straight to peoples' hearts.
ReplyDeleteA good song does resonate in many hearts!
ReplyDeleteAh yes indeed, and to take this thought further, i remember as a Girl Guide (some folks say Girl Scout) singing the song Music Alone Shall Live Never Shall Die"
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog to read mine
much love
A song can not be held down. I love that thought, Carrie.
ReplyDelete"Its voice carries beyond the pages that hands once held." It does & dwells in may more hearts. Beautiful Carrie.
ReplyDeleteThis is a delightful poem, Carrie. And true that quote by Harry Belafonte!
ReplyDeleteA great poem. Music IS the universal language that transcends all barriers!
ReplyDeleteAnd here's an added bonus: Even if you don't understand the words (maybe you don't speak Albanian), the music can still speak to your soul.
DeleteWe don't sing enough.Sadly I live in a culture where you don't hear people singing in public going about their daily work.
ReplyDeleteNodding yes to this one! Enjoyable reading.
ReplyDeletebeautiful blog...music adds life to life..we rise above when we are free to sing
ReplyDeleteI think you are right, often the poem is a song. I love "pages that hands once held." "Touched," comes to mind. Perhaps a sacred thought.
