The Stars and Their Stripes

Also linking with Imaginary Gardens for Kerry's prompt "Iconic people society"

From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
~Samuel F. Smith, "America"

She waved her flag for freedom amidst a higher wind
hoping for contentment or just one truer friend
in a world that knows it's legends only by the stars
and the stripes that wave higher seem to have more scars
so hold your banner gently and keep it close in love with pride
for fulfillment cannot be reached for it is a flag that waves inside.

My crown is called content, a crown that seldom kings enjoy.

Can't Run Away From the Circus.

"Her life was a circus.  So she decided to enjoy the ride."
~Queenisms

Life is a highway so I asked for a Porsche,
but I got a rough trail with a galloping horse.

Life is a gala so I asked for a gown
but I got overalls that were meant for a clown.

Life is an opera so I asked for a stage
but I got a parakeet that sings in a cage.

Life is a circus so I asked for a trapeze with a net
but I got a small yard with a tiny swing set.

Linking with Imaginary Gardens for Mama Zen's "words count"....come join the crowd it's the biggest show on earth. :-)

Pull the Trigger Slow

"Life is not lost by dying; life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, in all the thousand small uncaring ways." ~Stephen Vincent Benét

Life is fragile like a flower in winter
yet tough like a loaded gun
in a world where war and hunger
in some way touches everyone

so hold on to this moment
hard yet tender like a rose
for there are bullets in the chamber
but pull the trigger and they quickly go.

Big World

Linking with dVerse for Claudia's prompt "The things we see".

There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again. ~Elizabeth Lawrence

It's a big world in the eyes of a child where wonder lives up to its name.
Everything is a view from a mountain top
no two places are ever the same.
A raindrop is like a giggle and a slip an utter laugh
a hug is a vertical wrestle
and a kiss is an ocean splash.
Its a big world in the eyes of a child where wonder lives up to its name.
but as we grow up it shrinks like a tall lit candle
for like ears and noses complacency grows bigger with age.

N is for Night

Linking with A B C Wednesdays

Mine is the night, with all her stars. ~Edward Young

I have settled my heart within her blanketed fold
where my gaze lingers on sparkling eyes
it is the comfort only she can provide
deep in my dreams that
rise up in her arms
at midnight
our dreams
become
one.

A Deep Grave

Linking with Poetry Jam for the "Graveyard" prompt with Laurie.

God pours life into death and death into life without a drop being spilled. ~Author Unknown

It was a grave decision when he took beauty over deeper things
like a porcelain vase he just had to touch
he reached out his hand to caress
the detailed edges
and then
in a moment
he was too
far gone
breath
by breath
he gave
all he
had
to her
until
there was
nothing left
to give
he lost it all
his wealth
the beauty of true love
his heart and the girl
leaving a vacuum in his soul the size of a mass grave
yes it was a grave decision when he took beauty over deeper things.

The Warden Lost The Keys

Linking with Imaginary Gardens

It is my own treachery that binds the loosest ends
and prevents my own wild dreams and yearnings
from escaping or returning once again.

The tactics needed and the art of love and war
are a scheme my heart has captured
and lost in tenderness and battle scars.

The energy to build a fire with twigs in the dark
is an ardor I traded for restless sleep
in alliance with the complacent and hardened hearts.

I am a warden that holds the keys of all fair and true
yet I lose them in my searching
for I hoped I had given them all to you.

The Vastness of the Sea

Google Images

Linking with Poetry Jam for "the sea" prompt.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),
It’s always our self we find in the sea.
~e.e. cummings

If standing before the vastness of the sea
you cannot find from within yourself
just one grain of hope rising up
as you look at the ocean holding up the sky
like a banner for all to see
revealing that there is somthing greater
and more powerful holding everything
together...
...if in just that one moment you cannot
find just one grain of hope then
like a lost grain of sand...
...you may never find it at all....

A Recovering Poet

I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart. I am. I am. I am. ~Sylvia Plath

A few years ago I watched the movie "Julia and Julia".  I became fascinated by the idea of having a voice out in the blogasphere.  Speaking my thoughts out loud and actually having someone listen.  It became another branch of a dream that I already had stirring in the winds of my heart and mind, and I knew that it was something that I would eventually do.

It was not long after those thoughts that my world took a turn that I had never expected.  I was faced with the stress of an adult child with a severe drug addiction.  I cannot express how devastating it was for me, but somehow through out that period I took the time to create my blog and started plugging away at writing and making my voice heard.  Little by little I met other bloggers to follow that also followed me.  I came across a blog called Poets Who Blog. At the time I was unaware it was not an active site so I left my email and a link to my site.  Within a month of that time I was contacted by Robert Lloyd the founder of another wonderful and still very active site called "Poet's United".  Since then there has been no turning back.

My life has changed in many ways since then.  I am now divorced, living in an apartment with my son.  It is hard sometimes, but I always have something new to write about, and that is a good thing.  I have found that I write more in adversity than I do in the complacency of easy times, but I do write either way.  All I can hope for now is that I will find inspiration and a true muse in the good times that I hope await.

Selected Essays

I wanted to gather together some of the essays that I had written over the years and have them in one place.  These are the ones that I wanted to share again.  I hope that get somethings more from them the second time around.

Echoes In the Wind
